Google runs the internet. We rely on Google to ask all of our questions. From “What’s Kim Kardashian’s net worth?” to “How do I make a website?”. Google’s answers are endless. They know everything. This leads us to ask ourselves the question, Is Google taking over our lives? And Are we addicted to Google? The answer is yes. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing. There are plenty of healthy things to be addicted to, such as working out and celery. In today’s post, we will analyze why we are addicted to Google and why they are taking over our lives. Then, we will uncover why that is not necessarily a bad thing.
First, Google knows everything. Through Google, we are able to have information, quickly at our finger tips. We use Google to figure out directions and to store our information on Google Drive. Yes, we are addicted to Google and we use it for everything. The biggest critique of Google is that it is making us “stupid” because we have the information quickly. So, 1. We do not have to look hard for the information but 2. we only “skim” the information. We do not actually read it. My response to this, is that our laziness is a personal problem. We have to look at the bigger picture and see all of the benefits and opportunities Google has provided for us. Google makes it easier for everyone to have access to the SAME information. Before Google, everyone got their information through book at libraries. The books you had access to in your library were often limited if you were a person of color or if you lived in an impoverished neighborhood. Google allows for everyone to have access to the same materials and resources
Personally, the only issue I have with Google is their lack of diversity within their team. They have very few individuals from the Latinx community and that is probably why Google Translate (Spanish) is not good. Yes, Google runs the world like Beyoncé but we must look at the bigger picture and the opportunities the browser has provided.
